What To Look For In a Contractor
With so many options out there, it can be hard to know which contractor is right for you. Do you go for the company with the best price? Do you trust Google Reviews? How do you know who is trustworthy — if they will do a good job?
These are tough questions! But — while we may be biased — we think seeing how your options match up to the following criteria can be pretty telling. So, with that said, here's what you should be looking for in a contractor.
1. Can they do the work?
First things first, you need to know that your contractor can accomplish what needs to be done. Check the company's website and social media pages. Do they list the service you need in their areas of work? Are they known for it? Knowing this right away will help ensure neither yours nor your contractor's time is wasted.

2. Are they active in the community?
Have you heard of this company before? Is their name familiar? While selecting a contractor shouldn't be a popularity contest, it can be comforting to know that you're working with a trusted local name.
You'll also want to check how well they're reviewed online, on Facebook, Home Advisor, Angie's List, the Better Business Bureau, etc. Have past customers been satisfied with the work done? What qualities were of note? Are there any red flags?
3. Do they do custom bids?
Getting custom quotes from potential contractors is a great way to discover how prices compare across different companies. But don't get sucked into the 'cheaper is better' trap — your bids may not line up dollar for dollar and will likely fall onto a sliding scale of quality, skill, and approach.
Take into account variables such as the quality and safety of materials used, the skill of the labor, and the invasiveness of the project itself. And be sure to ask about rebate programs! Many companies offer them as a way to offset the cost of taking on home improvements.
4. Did they provide a contract?
Every project should have a contract, no matter the size of the work. Every single detail should be included — from a work plan, to descriptions of the work, to materials used, to payment schedule, and everything in between. A solid contract ensures that you are informed about the project, and that you are protected should any dispute arise.
5. What do they stand for?
A company that cares for its people, its community, and its impact in the world is likely to treat your home with the same level of respect. Look for a contractor that shares your values of integrity, honesty, and efficiency — much better than someone who takes shortcuts for efficiency's sake or seems a little too eager to make a buck.
Do you feel like they are communicating straight with you? Are you comfortable with their personality? Will they go the extra mile? Trust your instincts!
